What Rotherham's homes mean for a new boiler

Three things are worth knowing before a boiler swap in Rotherham:

Infographic showing Rotherham's water hardness: hard across most of the borough, including Maltby, Wath, Swinton and Kilnhurst (the hardest), Rawmarsh, Thrybergh, Dalton, Wickersley, Bramley, Moorgate, Dinnington, Anston and Kiveton; moderately hard in Kimberworth, Greasbrough, Parkgate, Aston, Swallownest, Treeton, Whiston and Thurcroft
  • The water is hard almost everywhere. Every Rotherham postcode we checked with Yorkshire Water was hard or moderately hard (2025), with the hardest water in Maltby, Wath, Swinton and Kilnhurst. Over the years, hard water leaves limescale inside a boiler, particularly on the hot water side of a combi, so a limescale reducer is worth adding when you order. It's a magnetic unit fitted on the water supply to your boiler, designed to help reduce scale building up inside it.
  • Many homes date from the 1950s and 60s. About a third of Rotherham's homes were built between 1945 and 1972, against a quarter across England. Many were fitted with a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard and a tank in the loft. You can keep that setup with a new regular or system boiler, or switch to a combi online and free up the space. Our guide to converting to a combi explains what's involved.
  • Older systems hold sludge. Some older homes still have a back boiler behind a gas fire, and radiators and pipework that have been in place for decades can hold sludge that would clog a new boiler. That's why every installation includes a chemical flush and a magnetic filter. Our back boiler replacement guide covers your options.

Wentworth Woodhouse

At Wentworth, north-west of Rotherham, Wentworth Woodhouse was built for the Marquesses of Rockingham in the mid-1700s. Its east front stretches for more than 180 metres and is often described as the longest of any English country house. A preservation trust took it over in 2017 and is restoring it.

Conservation areas in Rotherham

Rotherham has 28 conservation areas, including Wentworth, the town centre, Moorgate, Whiston, Wickersley, Laughton-en-le-Morthen and North and South Anston. Replacing a boiler with the flue in the same place isn't usually affected. If a new flue is going on a wall or roof that faces the road, it may need planning permission, so check with Rotherham Council first.

Choosing your boiler

Your quote recommends a combi, system or regular boiler from Worcester Bosch, Viessmann, Ideal, Baxi or Glow-worm, sized for your home. If you want to compare first, our guides to combi vs system boilers and what size boiler you need explain the choice.

How it works

Answer a few questions online for your fixed price, then choose your boiler and a date. After booking, you send us a few photos of your boiler, the area around it and the flue so we can check everything matches.

On the day, expect a few hours without heating or hot water. Your engineer fits and commissions the new boiler and shows you how the controls work. We then register the manufacturer warranty for you. Our guide to the boiler replacement process goes through each step.
