What Hull's homes mean for a new boiler

Three things are worth knowing before a boiler swap in Hull:

Infographic showing Hull's water hardness: very hard in the city centre, Newland, the Avenues, Gipsyville, Hessle Road, Holderness Road, Marfleet, Anlaby, Hessle and Cottingham; hard in Bransholme, Kingswood, Sutton-on-Hull, Hedon, Bilton, Withernsea and Hornsea
  • The water is very hard. Every HU postcode we checked with Yorkshire Water was hard or very hard (2025). The city centre, Newland, the Avenues, Hessle Road, Holderness Road and Marfleet are very hard, along with Anlaby, Hessle and Cottingham. Hard water leaves limescale inside a boiler over time, especially on the hot water side of a combi, so across Hull a limescale reducer is worth adding when you order. It's a magnetic unit fitted on the water supply to your boiler, designed to help reduce scale building up inside it.
  • Hull is a city of terraces. Nearly half of Hull's households live in a terraced house, twice the England figure. In a terrace, the boiler is often in the kitchen or a back room, and the flue has to sit a set distance from windows, doors and the house next door. The photos you send after booking let us check the flue position before the day.
  • Older systems hold sludge. About 23% of Hull's homes were built between the wars, against 15% across England. Many still have a hot water cylinder and loft tanks, or a back boiler behind a gas fire, which you can switch to a combi online. Old pipework can also hold sludge that would clog a new boiler, which is why every installation includes a chemical flush and a magnetic filter. Our back boiler replacement guide covers your options.

Hull and Ideal boilers

Ideal Heating, the company behind Ideal boilers, was founded in Hull in 1906 as the National Radiator Company, and it is still based in the city. Ideal is one of the brands we fit, and you can see the models we offer on our Ideal boilers page.

Conservation areas in Hull

Hull has 27 conservation areas, including the Old Town, the Avenues and Pearson Park, Newland Park, Boulevard, Sutton Village and Marfleet Village. Replacing a boiler with the flue in the same place isn't usually affected. If a new flue is going on a wall or roof that faces the road, it may need planning permission, so check with Hull City Council first.

Choosing your boiler

Your quote recommends a combi, system or regular boiler from Worcester Bosch, Viessmann, Ideal, Baxi or Glow-worm, sized for your home. If you want to compare first, our guides to combi vs system boilers and what size boiler you need explain the choice.

For a full heating system replacement or work involving a hot water cylinder, call us on 020 4614 2422. These jobs need assessing individually, so we can't price them instantly online.

How it works

Answer a few questions online for your fixed price, then choose your boiler and a date. After booking, you send us a few photos of your boiler, the area around it and the flue so we can check everything matches.

On the day, expect a few hours without heating or hot water. Your engineer fits and commissions the new boiler and shows you how the controls work. We then register the manufacturer warranty for you. Our guide to the boiler replacement process goes through each step.
